The Story Behind 234Collectives - TWO THREE FOUR COLLECTIVES

The Story Behind 234Collectives

There is a version of this story where I tell you that 234Collectives started with a business plan, market research and a perfect strategy. That would be easier. But it would not be true.

234 is Nigeria's international dialling code. Simple. But to me, it represented something far bigger than geography. It represented people. Movement. Diaspora. Shared experience. A generation connected across Lagos, London, New York, Toronto and beyond. People who may live in different places but still carry pieces of home with them.

The vision was never "African fashion." It was to build a globally relevant lifestyle brand told through our own lens. Honestly, unapologetically and with depth. Not performative culture. Real culture.

Most people encounter brands once they are already polished. They do not see what came before, the uncertainty, the late nights, the constant pivoting, the quiet moments of doubt that nobody posts about.

There was a point where I had three completely different directions for the brand open on my laptop at the same time. Different names, different aesthetics, different stories. None of them felt right. I almost walked away from the whole thing that week. Complicate things with  balancing a corporate career and family responsibilities, and it sometimes is genuinely hard to justify continuing to pour time and energy into something with no guarantee of working.

"If we do not tell our own stories properly, someone else will simplify them for us."

But I kept returning to that thought. And more than any business case, it was enough to keep going.

This may sound strange coming from a fashion founder, but clothing was never really the final destination. Fashion is the medium. The real goal is expression, conversation, narrative and reclaiming the right to frame our own perspective.

That is why many of our pieces reference history, movement and identity.

The Efunroye pieces, for example, were not designed simply to look good. They were created to provoke curiosity. To make people ask questions. To encourage deeper engagement with stories that are too often reduced to footnotes.

The idea that clothing could function almost like a cultural artefact, wearable but layered with meaning became central to how we think about everything we make.

One thing building something independently teaches you very quickly is that it is deeply psychological work. You are forced to sit with fear, ego, inconsistency, comparison and patience, often all in the same day. There are days where everything feels possible. There are also days where you genuinely question whether any of it is connecting.

Social media rarely shows that part. But that part is real. And honestly, I think that is where most founders are actually formed. Not in the moments of success. In the long stretches of uncertainty.

234Collectives is still evolving. The vision is growing. The products are improving. The storytelling is becoming sharper and the community is becoming clearer. We are building in public, experimenting, learning, refining.

This is not a "we made it" story. Not yet. It is a building story. A story about trying to create something meaningful from culture, history, experience and ambition while navigating real life at the same time.

It is honest and if we do this properly, 234Collectives becomes more than a fashion brand. It becomes a document of perspective.
